I really can’t believe just how fast time flies!

I’m getting a little bit of a jump on this one because, well, I am a *cough* bit… of a procrastinator…when it comes to motivation to write sometimes, and there is no sense in denying it. So, to counter that, I will just super jump the gun! ha!

*Edit: It is now time to post this and lookie there! I already have it done! Good job past self!)

You know, I didn’t expect to be working here. It kind of jumped up as a bit of a surprise, but a better surprise in that fashion, I simply couldn’t imagine. There really isn’t another job where you can do so much as this in one day…one minute, you will be teaching a school lesson from a hundred years ago, and the next minute, you are running a tour, then making butter to bake a pie in a homestead beside a fully restored 1921 Model T Ford Truck, then you are leading an apple packing relay! Never a dull moment.

So every year, we (generally) have four positions open up for different parts in the running of the motor that is The Creston Museum. There are only two positions that are relatively the same every year, and two that change every year.

And so,  it is here that I describe the fabulous opportunities that await! But first…I have a couple questions for you…

Do you like novels from the 1900’s-40’s? Do you like working with your hands? Do you like problem solving? and people? And problem solving with people?

We-eeeeellllll…let me just say…I think I might have something for you to consider 😉

DRAMA MAJORS!!!! CALLING DRAMA MAJORS!!!

 

OR EVEN SOMEONE WHO JUST HAS A TENDENCY TO THE DRAMATIC!!! FOR THAT MATTER ANYONE WHO LIKES TO IMPROVISE AND MAKE BELIEVE AND CAN ACCURATELY INCORPORATE HISTORICAL EVENTS!!

 

This is a new position this year, and we are SOOO excited for it. For a while, we have been hoping to be able to bring another…layer…of interactivity to the Museum. The posting will welcome someone to work closely with Tammy and myself to enthusiastically bring to life a character (or characters) from Crestons past for several of the programs being offered at the museum this summer, including a daily gossip-walking tour downtown, and perhaps even as a school teacher, or a homesteading pioneer, or an explorer, or a business lady/gent. If you have an OUTGOING personality, and THRIVE being the center of attention, and have an !m@&!N@t!#n  and ENERGY that simply does not stop, there is a preeeeeeetty good chance that you will find great inspiration in this position!

Improv. skills are somewhat of an asset for this position… *wink *wink *nudge * nudge*, as you will be interacting with the public in your character, so actually improv skills and a good memory are both assets, because you will get to put to work your ‘memories’ of the town and the valley and the goings on of the day. Much fun. VERY much fun!

 

(its also fun because you get to work with me. i’m pretty fun. at least I think I am.)

You will also get to wear clothing of the day, be it suit, hobo attire, or even if you feel like it, flour sack skirts! (flour sack skirts in the summer time are truly under-rated! You would never guess!)

As much fun as it is, it will also be some pretty hard work. There is quite a bit of line memorizing. There reeeeally is a lot of memorizing, and a ton of organizing. You will have to be very motivated to get your presentations prepared and ready at least a few days before, in addition to working with the Visitor Services & Event Coordinator to personify the events, in addition to everyday tours and pushing events and activities through vignettes and interactions.

Hourly Wage: $12.00 per hour, plus 11.53% Employer costs (4.95 CPP, 2.29% EI, 4% Holiday Pay, 0.29% WCB)

 

VISITOR SERVICES & EVENT COORDINATOR:

For those who like to socialize and organize and fuss and bustle about…fussbustle? like to organize and fussbustle? This position is basically a gift on a silver platter! It is nothing BUT socializing and organizing and fussbustling! Alongside the Historical Re-Enactor, you will work closely with Tammy and myself (yippee!) to build beneficial partnerships around town, and organize our 3 major events.

We have so much going on throughout the 4 month open season; several large events actually; (Kids Day, Afternoon Tea, Evening in the Courtyard), among the smaller day to day happenings, both on and off site programming {we deliver programs all over town; including schools and seniors homes…which you will be largely responsible for operating}, and also impromptu programming for visiting patrons and families.

So really you will play a pretty strong roll in pooling the collective creative resources to to create the ultimate learning and fun experience for our patrons! (spin-off: if they are fun for patrons, they most likely will be fun for you too). like, THE ultimate. so super outstanding. MIND.  =   BLOWN. type of programming. Which of course you will be able to do without problem because you will be just that awesome at your job.

That’s not to say it doesn’t come with it’s fair share of hard work and challenges though. The person best suited to this job is very organized. There will be a lot going on, in very quick succession, and even overlapping each other. You will also be able to get the job done on your own, while the others are doing their jobs or also be able to work as a team with them, be it delegating or tag-teaming tasks and projects to get the job done.

COLLECTIONS POSITION

Like the treasure chest of positions, you will be working hands on with the Museum collections. You see, we just got new storage units, and there is still quite a bit of work to be done doing this, and doing that…but seriously, THE COOL STUFF THAT IS UP THERE!

Whoever gets this position will surely find themselves continually sidetracked (which, you know, you’re gonna have to work to minimize, of course)…but having just a touch of OCD would come in mighty handy as there is much database organizing, numbers to sort, bins to divide, and odd shaped things to find a home for. So actually a bit of a numbers brain would be fantastic as well. You see, we have just finished up a massive storage re-organization and although the better part of it is done, there are always things that have found their way awry; and ALLLLLWAYS new stuff coming in that needs to be entered. People just can’t resist giving us stuff! And when it’s fun stuff like the rest of our collection, how can we resist? It’s a good thing too, because that’s what makes this job.

ARCHIVAL POSITION

HEY!! BOOKWORMS!! YES!! BOOKWORMS!! LOOK UP FROM YOUR BOOKS FOR A SECOND!!

Well hello there!

Have you ever wanted to get paid to read and research and solve mysteries??? Do you like provoking thought on social media?

hee. hee. hee…

I think I just might be able to make your day.

The Archival position holds several responsibilities, including digging up fun(ny), or intriguing stories for our ‘On This Day’ online feature, where you pour through our newspaper collection to find and highlight relevant, interesting, or funny things that have happened throughout history, even attending to the regular research requests for family histories, information on old business buildings, local characters and business people…

ALSO, we have shelves and shelves and shelves of pictures, and newspapers, and documents, and maps… and did I mention that the Archives are climate controlled? Although you will have to slave away in the hot sun with the others as required, (like giving tours and minding the gift shop and cleaning) you will get to be in the air conditioning most of the time 😉 So that’s a bonus. (actually it’s a huge bonus don’t let me undermine it’s luxury)

Since all of our summer positions are grant funded, there are some criteria that each applicant must meet for the funders to provide the money to pay you.

Are you…

-A Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada?

-Legally entitled to work in Canada?

-Between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment?

-Finished the school term at the start of employment?

-A full-time student January-April 2017?

-Intending to return to full-time studies in September 2017?

-Willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment?

-Not employed by another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) over the summer?
