SUMMARY:Creston's Great Duck Debate
DESCRIPTION:Imagine you are living in the Creston Valley in 1942 – and getting caught up in the hottest debate of the time: Should the flats west of Creston be reclaimed for farmland? Or should the natural marshes and lakes out there be left for the ducks? \nIn the Valley’s early settler history\, the answer to that question was pretty much unanimous. But starting in 1942\, the question of whether to continue reclamation centred on Duck Lake\, the Valley’s last remaining area of natural wetlands – and suddenly things weren’t quite so unanimous anymore. \nWe created this special presentation for the 2022 Creston Valley Bird Festival. Everyone liked it so much we’ve been asked to give it again for members of the Festival committee who couldn’t attend the original – and we’re opening it up to everyone else! Join us on Wednesday\, July 13 at 9:00 AM for an in-depth look at the history of reclamation\, the preservation of wetlands for wildlife\, and the fight over Duck Lake that marked the transition. \nAdmission by donation.

SUMMARY:Virtual Visits with Santa
DESCRIPTION:As it happens\, Santa loves museums. It’s a little known fact\, but they’re his favourite places to visit when he takes one of his rare vacations from the North Pole. So when Santa realised he couldn’t come to Creston in person this year to visit with all the good little girls and boys\, he called us to ask if we could help him out. Of course we were happy to! \nVirtual Visits with Santa\nSaturday\, December 12\, 2020\n2:00 – 4:00 PM\nCall the Creston Museum at 250-428-9262 to sign up for a special personal visit with Santa on Saturday\, December 12. Then\, watch for an email from the Creston Museum (crestonmuseum@telus.net) that tells you how to join him on Zoom (Santa has recently discovered Zoom and he thinks it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread). \nDonations are very much appreciated! All donations will be shared between the Creston Museum and PAWS (Santa loves animals\, too\, you know. How would he do his job without the reindeer to pull his sleigh?). You can make a donation with a credit card or etransfer when you call to sign up\, or click here to go to our secure donations page at CanadaHelps.org. If you do that\, though\, please include a note that it’s for a visit with Santa\, so we’ll know to share it with PAWS. \nDon’t worry – COVID won’t keep Santa from making his rounds on Christmas Eve! He’s an essential service! He\, Mrs. Claus\, the elves\, and the reindeer have been isolating themselves up there at the North Pole\, making sure they all stay healthy and well so they can travel around the world delivering presents. You can follow him – and find lots of information and games – on NORAD’s Santa tracker website.

SUMMARY:Kids Day (Month)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Kids Day! (Month) \nThis is the first in a month long series of twice weekly activities/challenges hosted by the Creston Museum in lieu of our traditional Kids Day! To participate: Complete the challenge and share it with us! \nAll the challenges will be listed here on Mondays and Thursdays each week – scroll down to see them all! \nTo share your challenge with us: post it on our Facebook\, Twitter\, or Instagram using the hashtag #KidsDay; send us a photo via email; or bring your project to the Creston Museum (we’re open 10:00 – 4:00\, Tuesday to Saturday). \nCHALLENGE #4: INVENT A FOUR-INGREDIENT RECIPE\nAll throughout history\, there have been times when money is tight\, and food is short. So people had to get creative with what they had to eat! \nHere is your challenge: \n\n–> Invent a 4 ingredient recipe using ONLY things you have in your house. Don’t go to the store and buy anything! Any Spices other than salt and pepper count as an ingredient! \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \nCHALLENGE #3: CROCHET THREE GRANNY SQUARES\nCrocheting is the art of making a fabric through loops of yarn using a hook. It has many handy-dandy uses! You can make everything from clothes and slippers\, to cloths\, to blankets with it\, much like knitting! Instead of using two needles\, you use one hook. \nA granny square is an easy way to piece together a larger blanket\, one square at a time. Once you have enough squares for the size of blanket you want\, you sew or crochet them all together. You can do the same colours of granny squares\, or different colours; the same pattern\, or different patterns! \n\n(if you don’t know how to crochet\, you can check out our how-to lesson on the Creston Museum Online Learning Center!) \n  \n\nCHALLENGE #2: MAKE AN OLD PIECE OF CLOTHING INTO SOMETHING NEW\nHand-me-downs and re-purposing have been essentials for as long as people have worn clothes! During the depression\, when flour companies found out that people were making clothing for themselves and their children out of the 100-lb flour sacks\, they started making them with prints on them! \nYour challenge today:\n–> Take clothing that you don’t wear anymore\, or some clothes that are too big/too small\, and turn them into something wearable! \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nCHALLENGE #1: BUILD A BIRDHOUSE WITHOUT USING WOOD!\n\nWho doesn’t love to watch birds flying back and forth to their nests in the spring! But sometimes getting a wooden house kit isn’t the easiest\, and not everybody can just make one. So here is your first challenge!\n–> Build a birdhouse out of recycled material you can find around your house! \n(Keep in mind\, it has to be safe for the birdies so don’t use or decorate it with anything they can get caught or tangled in!) \n(Photo courtesy Google Images)

SUMMARY:The Night the High School Burned
DESCRIPTION:On a Wednesday morning in April 1980\, Leanne\, a Grade 11 student at Prince Charles Secondary School\, in Creston BC\, called her friend. “Maureen\,” she said\, “there’s no school today.” \n“Why not?” asked Maureen. \n“Because there’s no school.” \nAt about 2:00 AM the night before\, fire had broken out in the thirty-year-old building. Within an hour\, the structure was fully engulfed and all firefighters could do was hose down nearby residences to keep them from catching fire. By dawn\, the school – one of the finest in the Kootenays; home to award-winning band\, drama\, and art programs; producer of provincial championship sports teams; provider of a vast array of academic and trades programs – was gone. \nThe Creston Museum has film footage. \nWe’re marking the fortieth anniversary of the PCSS fire with a special presentation at the Tivoli Theatre. \nIt’s a double feature! \nFirst on the bill: Hockey! Third period of a nail-biter Game 6 playoff matchup between the Creston Clippers and the Kimberley Knights! \nFollowed by The Night the High School Burned: historic photos of the school from its construction to the day it burned; highlights from its history; memories of students and teachers – and approximately twenty-five minutes of film footage of the fire that destroyed it all. \nDoors open 6:30; show starts at 7:00. There will be a very brief AGM of the Creston & District Historical & Museum Society in between the two features. \nAdmission: Members of the Historical Society – by donation; Non-members $10. Admission includes pop or popcorn. Not a member? Sign up here!

SUMMARY:History Mystery Play-Time
DESCRIPTION:Here at the Creston Museum\, we’re always receiving new donations of stuff connected to local history. \nOne of our most recent donations is a collections of several dozen photographs\, all from the 1940s to 1960s\, and most of them we haven’t been able to identify. \nLike this one: \n \nI have to admit\, this one’s intriguing! Look at the size of that parade – on an evidently cold winter’s day! And all the signs encouraging people to come out and cheer while Creston thoroughly trounced Kimberley at…something. But what? What was the event? And what on earth was going on between Creston and Kimberley to inspire the kind of rivalry that this photo suggests? \nWe’d like to invite you to check out these photos – and if you can tell us something about what’s happening in them\, we’d sure love to hear it! \nHistory Mystery Play-Time \nSaturday\, December 7 \n2:00 – 4:00 PM \nIn the Archives building at the Creston Museum \n219 Devon Street\, Creston BC \nAdmission by donation \n  \nSneak preview and free admission (with coffee and cookies!) exclusively for members of the Creston Museum: 12:00 – 2:00 PM

SUMMARY:The Great Father's Day Logging Arch Challenge
DESCRIPTION:This is a logging arch. It’s a horse-drawn log-skidding machine. It has ten-foot-high wheels and weighs about two thousand pounds. Think you could load it with logs and drag it through an obstacle course? \nJust kidding! We’ll use the scale-model replica instead. It’s just two-and-a-half feet high and weighs about forty pounds – but it can skid a decent-sized log. \nSo here’s the challenge: Load the model logging arch with a log\, using a peavey\, cant hook\, and/or log tongs – but not your hands. Then pull the logging arch through an obstacle course without hitting any of the obstacles\, bring it back to the starting point\, and unload the log. \nThink you can do it? We’ve got prizes if you can! \nPut your team of two to four people together and come on down to the Creston Museum on Father’s Day for the Great Father’s Day Logging Arch Challenge! \nYour team can consist of anyone you want\, of any age\, as long as at least one person on your team is a father (though not necessarily the father of anyone else on the team!). Everyone on your team has to help in the challenge in some way (how is up to you). We’ll award points for precision\, deduct them for running over an obstacle\, and give you a whole lot of credit for style and/or skill – and in the event of a tie in points\, then we’ll use speed to determine the winner. \nIt’s just $10 to enter your team\, and all proceeds will go towards rebuilding the big logging arch! \nSunday\, June 16 (Father’s Day\, of course)\, 2:00 PM at the Creston Museum \nRegister your team now! Use the form below\, or contact us at 250-428-9262 or crestonmuseum@telus.net. \nPlease select a valid form.

SUMMARY:Lumberjack Soldiers
DESCRIPTION:Lumberjack Soldiers: Creston’s Forestry Battalion\nNew Exhibit opens at the Creston Museum\nSaturday\, November 10\n1:00 PM – 4:00 PM\nAdmission by Donation \nLumberjack Soldiers: Creston’s Forestry Battalion \nIt is early Spring\, 1917. \nThe Great War has been raging in Europe for more than two years. Many of your friends\, the boys you went to school with – even your brother – have enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force and even now are “doing their bit” in France. \nBut you have not. \nYou have your reasons for not enlisting. Maybe you’re too young (maybe you’re too old). Perhaps you’re the only man of the house now\, with everyone else in the fighting. Or perhaps that childhood injury kept you from passing the medical examination. Maybe you’re just a little bit afraid. \nWhatever your reasons\, you are working hard here at home. Work is plentiful at the local sawmills\, with demand for wood so high. Some days\, you’re out in the woods\, cutting logs and driving the teams of horses to haul them back to the sawmill. Other days you’re working in the mill\, feeding the saws or hewing the ties. \nBut now\, Conscription is looming. Within the year\, you may be forced to enlist whether you want to or not. And then you see a notice posted at the mill: the government is looking for men just like you for a new type of soldier. \nToday\, you’re a lumberjack. Will you be a soldier tomorrow? \nThese are the stories of men who faced that choice.

SUMMARY:In Time
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of interactive history theatre! \nThere are many people milling about the Creston Museum\, and YOU are one of the lucky few who have been granted an audience with the one in charge. BUT: you have been given a task – a challenge – a mystery to solve – and it must be  completed before your audience time or you will not enjoy the consequences. Will you have to clean the latrine? Crush the grapes individually? Clean the floor with a single blade of grass? Or will you be rewarded for your hard work? \nThe clock is ticking. The sand is slipping through the hourglass. Lives could be at stake; history could be changed. The whole world rests on your shoulders\, and time is running out. Will you be in time? \nCome on your own or with a group – solve the mystery on your own or challenge your friends! \nSaturday\, September 15. Expect to spend about an hour and a half at the Museum\, completing your challenge and meeting the one in charge. A new challenge begins every fifteen minutes throughout the day from 10:00 to 4:00. Suitable for all ages. \n$10 per person. Coming with a group? Book five or more people for just $50! \nTickets available at the door or by purchasing online below. SUMMARY:Creston Valley Fall Fair
DESCRIPTION:The 1921 Creston Valley Fall Fair \nFor as long as people have been growing fruit in Creston\, they have been exhibiting it at fall fairs. As early as 1908\, local growers competed very successfully in apple fairs or fall fairs in Nelson\, Cranbrook\, Kaslo\, and Grand Forks\, and even in Spokane and London. The prizes the local fruit won at those fairs helped boost the Creston Valley’s fame as an apple-growing district. \nIt was not long before local residents began thinking of establishing a fair of their own\, and\, by 1918\, the Creston Valley Fall Fair that we know and love today had begun. \nThe Creston Museum is helping celebrate this 100th anniversary with a series of exhibits at the Creston Valley Fall Fair\, September 7-8\, 2018. It all takes place at the Fair itself\, held at the Creston & District Community Complex. \nFall Fair admission applies. For more information about the Creston Valley Fall Fair\, please visit www.crestonvalleyfair.com.

SUMMARY:Afternoon Tea
DESCRIPTION:So often\, we talk about the “firsts” in the community’s history – but what about the “lasts?” \nThe last passenger service on the railway through the Creston Valley. The last run of the last steamship on Kootenay Lake. The last telephone party line. The last performance of the Carpe Diem theatre group. \nThe last Afternoon Tea at the Creston Museum. \nYes\, that’s right – after twenty years\, the curtain is falling on the Creston Museum’s annual Afternoon Tea. \nJoin us as we celebrate this and other historic “lasts” in the Creston Valley. \nSaturday\, August 11\, 2018. Seatings at 1:00 and 2:30. Reservations are highly recommended: call 250-428-9262\, email crestonmuseum@telus.net\, or buy tickets online below. \n$12 per person ($10 per person for members). \n\nTable availability\, as of 3:00 PM Thursday:\n1:00 PM – One table for four available.\n2:30 PM: Three tables for four and one table for eight available\, plus a couple seats here and there.\n\n  \nInterested in coming in costume? \nWe suggest period attire from any time in history… \nor get creative and come dressed to represent a “Last” in Local History! \nHere are some ideas to get you started: \n\nThe last voyage of the sternwheeler SS Ainsworth was on November 29\, 1898 – she sank in a storm on Kootenay Lake en route from Nelson to Creston.\nThe last local casualty of the First World War was Russell Leamy\, who died in 1929 as a direct result of wounds to the chest he received in France.\nThe last day of operations for the original electrical power plant in Creston\, located on Victoria Avenue (now 10th Avenue North)\, was December 31\, 1933; the following afternoon\, the power dam on Goat River in Canyon went into operation.\nThe last (and first\, for that matter) time the Harlem Globetrotters played in Creston was December 31\, 1938 – though there have been several visits since from the Harlem Clowns and similar spin-off groups.\nThe last class to graduate from Creston Valley Junior-Senior High School (present-day Adam Robertson Elementary School) did so on June 27\, 1951.\nThe last day on which a siren signaled the curfew was January 13\, 1956; from then on\, a siren sounding in Creston would mean fire – the direct result of recommendations made by Acting Fire Marshal G.A. Alderson after the fire that destroyed the Crawford Block on Canyon Street on the previous New Year’s Eve.\nThe last run of the SS Moyie\, the last sternwheeler operating on Kootenay Lake (or anywhere else in North America\, for that matter)\, took place in April 1957.\nThe last day of operations for the local telephone switchboard office was in 1957; after that\, everyone enjoyed direct dial telephone service.\nThe last show at the Grand Theatre was “The Man from Colorado\,” which ran September 29-October 1\, 1960.\nThe last passenger service on the CPR trains through the Creston Valley was in 1964.\nThe last event held in the old Civic Centre before it burned was a Hallowe’en bonspiel hosted by the Creston Curling Club over the weekend of October 31-November 3\, 1968.\nThe last time Creston won a division title in the KIJHL was in 1977-1978; however\, the Creston Clippers were defeated by the Castlegar rebels for the League championship.\nThe last year that the downtown grain elevators operated as public grain handlers was in 1982; by then\, only the Alberta Wheat Pool elevator was still opened\, the United grain growers elevator having been shut down in 1971.\nThe last run of the West Creston ferry was made on October 31\, 1973.\nThe last full performance of Carpe Diem theatre group  (that I could find) was “A Midsummer Night’s Dream\,” presented in 1999\, though they did take part in InterArt 2000 in the summer of 2000 with a series of short skits.\nThe last class at Wynndel Elementary School was held in June 2008.
