SUMMARY:Forgotten Creston Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join author and publisher Keith Powell for the launch of his new book\, “Forgotten Creston: A Photo History of Early Creston & District.” \nThe collective memory of a town often lies in the photographs taken by its citizens. SUMMARY:The Night the High School Burned
DESCRIPTION:On a Wednesday morning in April 1980\, Leanne\, a Grade 11 student at Prince Charles Secondary School\, called her friend. “Maureen\,” she said\, “there’s no school today.” \n“Why not?” asked Maureen. \n“Because there’s no school.” \nAt about 2:00 AM the night before\, fire had broken out in the thirty-year-old building. Within an hour\, the structure was fully engulfed and all firefighters could do was hose down nearby residences. By dawn\, the school – one of the finest in the Kootenays; home to award-winning band\, drama\, and art programs; producer of provincial championship sports teams; provider of a vast array of academic and trades programs – was gone. \nApril 29\, 2025 is the forty-fifth anniversary of that fire. Join us as we explore the history of high schools in the Creston Valley and unveil previously unseen film footage of the fire. \n  \nTuesday\, April 29\n7:00 PM\nErickson Room\, Creston & District Community Complex\nThis presentation is being given in conjunction with our Annual General Meeting. You must be a member of the Creston Museum to vote at the AGM – you can purchase your membership online here using PayPal\, or by dropping in to the Museum. \nMuseum members have priority admission. \nAdmission is free for members; $5 for non-members. \nThere are limited seats available to non-members of the Museum – RSVP below to ensure you get one! \nMembers planning to attend are also encouraged to RSVP – thank you! \n

SUMMARY:Brown Bag History
DESCRIPTION:March’s Topic for Brown Bag History:\nLumberjack Soldiers: The Forestry Corps in the Great War\nSaturday\, March 21 \n12:00 PM \nIt is early Spring\, 1917. \nThe Great War has been raging in Europe for more than two years. Many of your friends\, the boys you went to school with – even your brother – have enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force and even now are “doing their bit” in France. \nBut you have not. \nYou have your reasons for not enlisting. Maybe you’re too young (maybe you’re too old). Perhaps you’re the only man of the house now\, with everyone else in the fighting. Or perhaps that childhood injury kept you from passing the medical examination. Maybe you’re just a little bit afraid. \nWhatever your reasons\, you are working hard here at home. Work is plentiful at the local sawmills\, with demand for wood so high. Some days\, you’re out in the woods\, cutting logs and driving the teams of horses to haul them back to the sawmill. Other days you’re working in the mill\, feeding the saws or hewing the ties. \nBut now\, Conscription is looming. Within the year\, you may be forced to enlist whether you want to or not. And then you see a notice posted at the mill: the government is looking for men just like you for a new type of soldier. \nToday\, you’re a lumberjack. Will you be a soldier tomorrow? \nJoin us on Saturday\, March 21\, to learn more about the stories of the men who faced that choice. \n  \nWhat is Brown Bag History? \nEvery month\, we visit local seniors homes with a presentation about local history – and now we’re making them open to the public\, too. \nSometimes\, these presentations are inspired by an exhibit we’re working on\, a community event\, or a local anniversary. Other times\, they’re the result of a research request or a donation of objects and photographs to the Museum. And sometimes it’s a specific request from one of our audience members that determines the theme. \nSo\, come on down and join us for some wide-ranging rambles through local history! \nAll presentations take place at the Creston Museum\, starting at noon. Admission is free for members of the Creston Museum; $5 for non-members. \n  \n  \nUpcoming Dates (topics to be confirmed): \nSaturday\, March 21 \nSaturday\, April 25 \nSaturday\, May 30 (Blossom Festival: Building the Community for 85 Years) \n  \n  \nTopics Coming Sooner or Later: \nThe Doctors\, Dentists\, and Nurses of the Creston Valley \nCivil Defence and the Cold War \nFive Years in Tye \n…and any topics you’d like to suggest! \n
