SUMMARY:Brown Bag History
DESCRIPTION:April’s Topic for Brown Bag History:\nOn Alert: Civil Defence in the Creston Valley\nSaturday\, April 25 \n12:00 PM \nThe idea of defending against enemy attacks on local communities grew out of the Second World War. But the end of the war did not end the threat of enemy attack – it just changed the identity of the “enemy.” Canada\, sandwiched between the two Cold War-era superpowers\, had to contend with the very real possibility of being caught in the crossfire of a new war. \nAnd so we see persistent efforts to maintain Civil Defence operations in the Creston Valley. It wasn’t always easy – sometimes it could hardly even be called successful. There was never an actual enemy attack to deal with (the surprise discovery of a mysterious parachute in the mountains near Yahk notwithstanding). It was\, however\, an effort that lasted at least twenty years\, helped address a few local disasters\, and left a legacy that we can see even today. \nJoin us on Saturday\, April 25\, to learn more! \nAdmission is FREE for members; $5 for non-members. \nThis presentation will be followed immediately by our Annual General Meeting and Volunteer Appreciation Event. \n  \n  \nUpcoming Dates (topics to be confirmed): \nSaturday\, May 30 (Blossom Festival: Building the Community for 85 Years) \nSaturday\, June 20 (TBC) \nSaturday\, July 17 (Branch 29: Creston’s Royal Canadian Legion) \n  \nTopics Coming Sooner or Later: \nThe Doctors\, Dentists\, and Nurses of the Creston Valley \nFive Years in Tye \n…and any topics you’d like to suggest! \n
