SUMMARY:Evening in the Courtyard
DESCRIPTION:A crowd preparing for the classic movie at the Evening in the Courtyard \nBring a lawn chair or blanket (or both!) and join us at the Creston Museum for an evening of delicious food and drinks\, music\, and a classic film on our lovely patio and lawn. The food is all locally-sourced – fruits and vegetables\, meats and cheeses\, eggs\, pickles\, breads\, and more (it’s all appetiser-style\, but nobody has ever gone home hungry!). Drinks include local wines\, beer\, and non-alcoholic juices and ciders. This year’s feature film has yet to be determined\, but in the past we’ve enjoyed Katherine Hepburn\, Lucille Ball\, and Ma and Pa Kettle. \nSaturday\, August 25. Social hour starts at 7:00; movie starts approximately 8:00 (or whenever it gets dark enough).\nAges 19+ only. Limited tickets available!\nThis is an outdoor evening event – please dress accordingly\, and consider bringing a flashlight. \n$30 per person\, includes your first drink ($25 for members)

SUMMARY:Afternoon Tea
DESCRIPTION:So often\, we talk about the “firsts” in the community’s history – but what about the “lasts?” \nThe last passenger service on the railway through the Creston Valley. The last run of the last steamship on Kootenay Lake. The last telephone party line. The last performance of the Carpe Diem theatre group. \nThe last Afternoon Tea at the Creston Museum. \nYes\, that’s right – after twenty years\, the curtain is falling on the Creston Museum’s annual Afternoon Tea. \nJoin us as we celebrate this and other historic “lasts” in the Creston Valley. \nSaturday\, August 11\, 2018. Seatings at 1:00 and 2:30. Reservations are highly recommended: call 250-428-9262\, email crestonmuseum@telus.net\, or buy tickets online below. \n$12 per person ($10 per person for members). \n\nTable availability\, as of 3:00 PM Thursday:\n1:00 PM – One table for four available.\n2:30 PM: Three tables for four and one table for eight available\, plus a couple seats here and there.\n\n  \nInterested in coming in costume? \nWe suggest period attire from any time in history… \nor get creative and come dressed to represent a “Last” in Local History! \nHere are some ideas to get you started: \n\nThe last voyage of the sternwheeler SS Ainsworth was on November 29\, 1898 – she sank in a storm on Kootenay Lake en route from Nelson to Creston.\nThe last local casualty of the First World War was Russell Leamy\, who died in 1929 as a direct result of wounds to the chest he received in France.\nThe last day of operations for the original electrical power plant in Creston\, located on Victoria Avenue (now 10th Avenue North)\, was December 31\, 1933; the following afternoon\, the power dam on Goat River in Canyon went into operation.\nThe last (and first\, for that matter) time the Harlem Globetrotters played in Creston was December 31\, 1938 – though there have been several visits since from the Harlem Clowns and similar spin-off groups.\nThe last class to graduate from Creston Valley Junior-Senior High School (present-day Adam Robertson Elementary School) did so on June 27\, 1951.\nThe last day on which a siren signaled the curfew was January 13\, 1956; from then on\, a siren sounding in Creston would mean fire – the direct result of recommendations made by Acting Fire Marshal G.A. Alderson after the fire that destroyed the Crawford Block on Canyon Street on the previous New Year’s Eve.\nThe last run of the SS Moyie\, the last sternwheeler operating on Kootenay Lake (or anywhere else in North America\, for that matter)\, took place in April 1957.\nThe last day of operations for the local telephone switchboard office was in 1957; after that\, everyone enjoyed direct dial telephone service.\nThe last show at the Grand Theatre was “The Man from Colorado\,” which ran September 29-October 1\, 1960.\nThe last passenger service on the CPR trains through the Creston Valley was in 1964.\nThe last event held in the old Civic Centre before it burned was a Hallowe’en bonspiel hosted by the Creston Curling Club over the weekend of October 31-November 3\, 1968.\nThe last time Creston won a division title in the KIJHL was in 1977-1978; however\, the Creston Clippers were defeated by the Castlegar rebels for the League championship.\nThe last year that the downtown grain elevators operated as public grain handlers was in 1982; by then\, only the Alberta Wheat Pool elevator was still opened\, the United grain growers elevator having been shut down in 1971.\nThe last run of the West Creston ferry was made on October 31\, 1973.\nThe last full performance of Carpe Diem theatre group  (that I could find) was “A Midsummer Night’s Dream\,” presented in 1999\, though they did take part in InterArt 2000 in the summer of 2000 with a series of short skits.\nThe last class at Wynndel Elementary School was held in June 2008.

SUMMARY:Children's Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Doing chores the old-fashioned way \nEvery year\, the Creston Lions Club organizes a Children’s Picnic at Centennial Park during Blossom Festtival…and every year\, the Creston Museum is there with hands-on activities and games. Will we bring the apple-packing relay race? Or the pioneer clothes for dress-up? Maybe it will be the laundry bucket and scrub board – or maybe we’ll be making old-fashioned ice cream! It’s something new every year\, so come on down and check it out! \nAdmission to the Children’s Picnic is free – sponsored by the Creston Lions Club. Donations are welcome\, though! \nFor more information on the Creston Valley Blossom Festival\, please visit www.blossomfestival.ca.

SUMMARY:Farm Trucks and Transport
DESCRIPTION:1947 Maple Leaf flat-deck truck donated to the Creston Museum\, Creston BC\, by Lloyd Bell. \nTrucks are pretty much the last thing that comes to mind when we think about farming\, but they were everywhere. Faster and more road-worthy than tractors\, able to go much longer distances than horses: trucks were\, from a very early period in Creston Valley’s history\, the number-one way of getting all the valley’s agricultural production to market. \nJoin us as we celebrate this often-overlooked aspect of local farming. The Creston Museum has two farm trucks of its own: a 1921 Model T one-ton\, and a 1947 Maple Leaf three-ton. Both are in running condition and will be featured front-and-centre this weekend! We also have half-a-dozen antique farm tractors\, and we’re working on rounding up other vintage farm vehicles. Watch this space for updates! \nSaturday\, May 19\, 1:00 – 5:00\nSunday\, May 20\, 10:00 – 5:00 \nAdmission by donation.
