Just as the fight for Vimy Ridge was wrapping up and the local soldiers there were preparing to move to another battlefield, a large group of men were preparing to leave Creston Valley for service overseas.

Men of the 230th Forestry Battalion about to embark for France, Creston BC, 13 April 1917

They were the Forestry Battalion – newly recruited loggers, lumbermen, sawmill hands, and others with experience in forestry trades, being sent over to France specifically to operate sawmills and provide all the wood needed at the front.

For your daily dose of history, we invite you to explore their story. This online exhibit has lots of things to consider in the “Further Exploration” section – feel free to share your thoughts by commenting on this post (or emailing us at crestonmuseum@telus.net)
