Normally, at this time of year, we’re gearing up for Kids’ day – the day in June that we turn over to the young and young-at-heart to explore the community’s story in a very hands-on and high-energy way. We won’t be able to do that this year (though we have lots of ways you can explore that story on your own in a hands-off kind of way, so come on down!) – so Alyssa is moving all of this year’s activities online!
Every Monday and Thursday in June, she’s posting a new challenge for you. Tuesdays and Fridays, I’ll follow up with an historical look at whatever the challenge’s theme is. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, if you bring your projects (or a photo of them, if you prefer) down to the Museum, we’ll have a place for you to put them on display for everyone to see!
Yesterday’s challenge is: build a birdhouse (or feeder – we’re not picky!) using recycled materials you find around your house – just make sure you don’t use things that the birds can get tangled in!
There are lots of ideas online, so take a look and get creative! Let’s see what you come up with!
And now, for your historical perspective, we refer you back to an article we posted near the start of the pandemic: Local History Goes to the Birds.
We’d also like to draw your attention to this great little backyard-birds checklist from the Kootenay-Columbia Discovery Centre. You can see all those birds very easily at the Wildlife Area, and most of them show up at the Museum quite regularly – so part of this challenge is to get outside and see how many you can find!
