The Quiet Front: Creston Valley and the Cold War

June 20 @ 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

The Cold War began immediately after World War II ended. Canada was not a key combatant – that distinction fell to Russia and the US – but we were allied with the US and geographically situated between the two superpowers. If hostilities broke out, we would be directly in the line of fire.

Then, in 1945, Soviet embassy worker Igor Gouzenko defected with documents that revealed a network of Russian spies operating in Canada. Clearly, the Soviet Union considered Canada an enemy.

The Creston Valley, only a short distance from the border, was caught in the middle.

Join us on Saturday, June 20 as we open this new exhibit. Drop in any time between 12:00 and 2:00 PM to walk through the exhibit with Curator Tammy Bradford and explore this fascinating period in Creston’s history.
