Today’s Museum Week theme is “Museum Moments.” We hope you’ll tell us about some of your best moments visiting museums.
I can tell you that working in a museum is full of best moments. One of my favourite examples: the chance it gives us to help connect people with their families, their memories, and their communities.
Several years ago, we hosted an exhibit called “Office Evolutions.” It was basically an excuse to get all of our typewriters and office equipment out of storage for a while (not doing that again – those things are heavy!). But one of those typewriters, the one in the photo at the top of the page, had been owned by a guy named Tom Homersham. Tom worked as an Express Messenger for the CPR, and when he retired, he passed the typewriter on to Cyril Colonel, who worked with him.
We put a little story about the typewriter and its history on our website, where it was seen by Tom’s granddaughter, who was doing some family history research. We set up an introduction, the granddaughter got to learn more about her grandfather than she ever thought would have been possible, Cyril got to reminisce about his early working days with the CPR, and we got the joy of watching it happen. And, the granddaughter sent us this photo of Tom Homersham:

So let’s hear your experiences! Have you ever had that kind of an opportunity to connect with someone or something in a museum? of course we’d love to hear about it if it was at the Creston Museum – but feel free to share your experiences in any museum!
